Western Electric 551 Driver

| Balanced Armature Magnetic Driver for PA | ||
| Western Electric made two magnetic driver for PA, one is 549W and the other is 551. These drivers has balanced armature mechanism and it contributes the loud speaking and low distortion. 551 has higher impedance than 549W. Using 551 or 549W driver, we should use 3A horn, if not, we can not taste its real sound. These drivers designed to use with 3A.horn. | ||

Magnetic driver DCR measurement is 280 ohm. So we should use 551 driver with tube amplifier that has 500 ohm output trans tap. Using lower impedance, such as 8 or 16 ohm, amplifier is not a good idea. We can see somebody using additional output transformer between 8 ohm amplifier out put and 551 driver in order to matching impedance. It is not a good idea, either. I tried it but it made poor sound. |

| In addition, I added 0.1 to 0.47uF hi quality capacitor between driver and amplifier to cut lower frequency. High energy of lower frequency will make some distortion. 551 sounds like a phonogram - we can feel amazing presence. This driver is the last magnetic driver from WE. Next generation driver from Western Electric is 555. | ||
